As I was reading this section of My Freshmen Year and The Mind at Work, I noticed a few similar topics being discussed in both. In both of the novels, the authors talk about minorities. In My Freshmen Year, she notices that minorities are more likely to sit alone while eating or to take it back to their dorms. She also states that most people hang out with others that are the same ethnicity or race as themselves. From what I have witness in college it seems that there are groups of mixed races and ethnicity, but I have also noticed groups made solely of one race or ethnicity. This is a hard subject for me to make observations about because when I look at someone and talk to them I don’t really notice their race or ethnicity. Also, in my hometown no one really cared about race and I was raised to not even notice it. People can be a minority and not look this way so it is hard to collect data on this subject. In The Mind at Work, the author talks about how minorities tend to get lower class jobs. I believe in some instances this is true but there are plenty of “majorities” that have struggles too.
I again could relate to most of the things that happen in My Freshman Year. The most memorable thing was that the CA’s were trying to get everyone together with activities. Our CA’s do this with us. Some of the events they had were very successful like we had Zumba in the lounge and we tied dyed shirt. But, I realized that when it comes to getting dinner with the CA or hanging out with them not many people want to. My favorite part of The Mind at Work is when he was talking about his mom as a waitress because as a kid, my mom was a waitress and I know how much hard work it actually is so that helps me relate to the author.
